And they're off! - Rose & Crown

Adventures (8)

And they’re off!

On Tuesday the 15th March, ourselves and a coach load of eager race goers, set off on a day out to Champion’s Day at Cheltenham. The weather was on our side, the tweed was out, and everyone was in great spirits.

Booze for breakfast… why not?

We kicked off the day in true Rose & Crown style, with a boozy breakfast and a browse of the Racing Post. Following some hearty grub, we chatted tips whilst waiting for the coach to arrive.

Cool kids to the back of the bus!

10.30am and the coach was here – Hurrah! Time to really up the celebrations and be on our merry way. Giles, Dave and I loaded up the coach, although we nearly left a few stragglers behind (– they were hiding in the loo!).

Once a final head count had been conducted and everyone settled down, the engine was fired up and off we went. Whilst Giles guided our driver out of Warwick’s winding roads, I marched up and down the coach ensuring everyone’s whistle was suitably wet before sitting down just in time to hear Yorkie’s rendition of a timeless classic race song (-or so I am told!).

Spirits were high as we edged closer to Cheltenham and the drinks continued to flow. It was safe to say everyone was hydrated; even the traffic couldn’t get us down. We arrived at Cheltenham and quickly filed off the bus just in time to get a drink, place a bet and watch the first race.

We have a winner!

The first race was over and I was up £15 – it may not seem a lot, but to a non –gambler, it was everything! Plenty other people had also found lady luck to be on their side judging by the cries of jubilation. The drinks continued to flow and winnings were had all round. But sadly before we knew it, it was 6pm and time to head back to the bus.

Nap anyone?

The mood had not dampened as we left Cheltenham and the drinks were again distributed until they were no more. I spied a few weary heads having a snooze as the lights went down, not to worry though; we had called ahead for reinforcements upon arrival at the pub.

Shots and Deli Boards

Home at last, sleepy heads awakened and we descended upon The Rose to be greeted by smiling team armed with shots, Deli Boards and plenty more beverages. A run round confirmed that all had had a fantastic time and were asking about our next adventure.

One Rose day out complete and its status a success, we are already gearing up our picnic baskets ready to go to the Warwick Proms in the summer. Dates and details to be revealed soon…
