Gwen’s Top Tips
Gwen’s Creative Evening Top Tips
Our lovely Gwen is renowned for making the ordinary look beautiful, so when she hosted an evening in our Private Dining Room showing you just how to do that, we knew it was an opportunity not to be missed. Not being someone with a wealth of knowledge about flowers in particular, I thought I would share with you Gwen’s top tips. Some you may be familiar with, and others may not.
No.1. Trim the stems.
If there was only one thing you took away from the evening, Gwen asked that this was it. Simply because, the stems dry up incredibly quickly without being in water, so for them to be able to last, you must trim the stems.
No.2. You can never use enough greenery.
Most people shy away from using greenery in their arrangements, but Gwen was keen to show that there is no reason to shy away, using plenty of eucalyptus in her arrangement.
No.3. Don’t be afraid to mix it up with colours.
You may be scared to put a bright orange with a pink, but don’t! With the right balance any two colours can go together and still look beautiful.
No.4. Not everything has to be the same height.
Not all of your arrangement has to be uniform for it to be beautiful. Taller items will not drown out the smaller. It allows for a more varied and natural look.
No.5. Add a very small drop of bleach to keep your arrangement fresh.
By very small, she means small. Obviously if you add a spoonful of bleach, you are asking for trouble. But a tiny dash and you’re golden!
No.6. Your vase does not dictate your arrangement.
Big vases can be a pain; it’s hard to make them look full without spending a fortune. Well, why not put a smaller vase within the bigger one? This allows for a fuller looking and beautiful arrangement without the cost. Genius!
No.7. Don’t throw anything away.
It may be tempting to just discard those unnecessary leaves and flowers that don’t quite make the cut. Don’t! They can be put in a small glass with one another and voila, you have a table talker.
No.8. Pick up on colour accents.
Use the things around you to inspire you. If you have got a fleck of pink in a painting, use a similar pink in an arrangement close by and it will bring out the best in both.
No.9. Tulip leaves can be turned outwards.
I know, revelation right? If a tulip is slowly opening then gently peel back the petals and it is transformed. Try it for yourself!
No.10. Finally, you can never use enough tea lights.
Lighting is key for a feature and a soft candlelight will set the mood just wonderfully.
Next time you’re having a dinner party or even trying to brighten up a room, bare these tips in mind and we’re sure it’ll be a hit!
